Awanuiārangi marks 30 years empowering Māori
Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is marking 30 years since it opened in two relocatable classrooms in Whakatāne.
The wānanga now delivers programmes from foundation courses through to doctoral degrees and post-doctoral studies to more than 5,900 students across three campuses.
Founder Sir Hirini Moko Mead says the aim was to make tertiary education readily available to Māori people including the iwi of Mataatua in the Bay of Plenty.
Education was to be a tool to empower people away from the effects of colonisation and confiscation and into the future, properly equipped to face new challenges.
