Nike Scout News November 2021
Check out what's happening at Nike
Thank you to a great start to the school year!
November is one of my favorite months of the year. The temperature is finally where it is cold in the morning and beautiful during the day. The fall colors are in full swing. And the holidays that are focused on family and gratitude and caring are upon us. We have much to be grateful for here at Nike Elementary School. We have a wonderful, caring staff from our custodian, our Paraprofessionals, our office staff, to all of our teachers. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to work with all of them and I know your children are in good hands with them. We have supportive parents and community, with a giving and engaged PTO at the forefront, to which we all say thank you for all that you do to make Nike Elementary School the highly rated school it is today. And finally, we have incredible students, who challenge themselves every day to learn and be engaged as well as challenging us to become better people. They are why we are here every day! Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter and let your friends know about us, too!
At home try and use the districts 8 pillars of success language so that your child knows the expectations in and out of school. Or you can focus on one of the characteristics as a family and see what kind of results you get!

8 PILLARS OF SUCCESS
November's Pillar focus word is Creativity. We are excited to see all of the creative activities that will happen at Nike this month.
Veterans Day
Counselor's Corner
From Mrs. Aubrey Holt, the Nike school counselor:
Every November is it common to discuss what we are grateful for. This month, students will look deeper into this topic as they challenge themselves to find gratitude in a variety of ways. K-1 parents: ask your students about what they are grateful for that starts with a certain letter or that they can not see or touch. The answers can be surprising and entertaining! Parents of 2nd-3rd grade, look for a small booklet that students will make about things they are grateful for. It is a great keepsake! Fourth grade will challenge themselves by answering a variety of questions designed to help them focus on gratitude.
All grades will also attend a lesson presented by the Child Advocacy Center which explains Kid's Rights. A letter about this program will be included in Thursday folders.
If your student needs a coat please let me know. Feel free to call, email or send me a note. Shiloh Baptist Church has graciously supplied us with winter coats for students in need. In addition, if your child needs clothing, socks, shoes, or other necessities, please contact me and I am happy to help.

Baby it's cold outside! As temperatures drop, please be sure your students come to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Please remember to make sure your child comes prepared with a jacket or coat to ensure that they can enjoy outdoor recess with the rest of their class!
Reminder! If your student has come home in clothes borrowed from the nurse's office, please wash and return those clothes.
MUSIC
Art
We are busy in the art room! While first trimester was focused on drawing and painting, second trimester will have us learning about ceramics and sculpture. We will still be painting and wear paint shirts when we can.
Thank you for donating items this past month! If you are able to donate items to the art room, we are in need of the following:
Round lids (sour cream size)
Baby wipes
Paper towel rolls
Yarn
Newspaper
Scrapbook paper
Empty ribbon spools
Again, thank you for thinking of us!
Library
First, I would like to say a HUGE thank you for all the support at Nike's fall book fair! Book Fair is one of my favorite events because it shows new books and authors for students to see.
November will be a busy month in the library! Fourth grade has been working on their Media Literacy Vocabulary and in November we will use the World Book online encyclopedia. We will also spend a few weeks working on a digital storytelling tool by using WeVideo to make short videos. Third grade will continue to work on sources of information such as the thesaurus and an almanac.
In the primary classes we will continue to read our Show Me Picture books - there are ten books on the list. We have also been talking about the difference between fiction and nonfiction books. Second grade will work on alphabetical order which is an important skill in the library.
November is the time when many of us start to think of buying holiday gifts. Books make excellent gifts! You could buy a book by a favorite author, a book in a series or kids love books with facts in them. Magazines also make great gifts and kids love to get their own "mail". There are many kid-friendly magazines such as National Geographic for Kids, Sports Illustrated for Kids and so many others.

Attendance and academic success are directly related. Therefore, every effort should be made by all students to attend school on a regular basis.
