You won’t find sweeping glass and metal skyscrapers filling the landscape. Instead, an emphasis on preservation and restoration means the buildings that fill the city’s core are a feast for architecture buffs. Visitors will do well to take time to walk the main areas: West End, Central, Sodo, North, and East downtown.

Hiking, running, meandering. Whatever you prefer, you’ll find it in the state's two largest state parks: Mount Spokane State Park and Riverside State Park. The two cover a combined total of nearly 25,000 acres.

You’d think a park as vast as Riverside would be a trek. You thought wrong. Located just nine miles northwest of downtown Spokane, there’s something for every outdoor enthusiast. The 40-mile-long, paved Centennial Trail starts here. Follow it to the end, and you’ll end up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The park has hiking and biking trails, horse trails complete with an obstacle course, and a 60-foot round pen, plus it is ORV-friendly. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention plenty of campsites.

FISK STATE PARK

Adjoining Riverside State Park is Fisk State Park. The park, located 30 miles northwest of downtown Spokane sits along the banks of the Spokane River. A loop trail traces the perimeter, and commanding granite cliffs encircle the water, creating a swimming hole called The Cove. Be sure to watch your step!

MOuNT SPOKANE STATE PARK

Every season is the perfect time to visit Mount Spokane State Park. You'll always get a different view with hiking, biking, and horse trails. The mountain is home to Mt Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park if you love winter sports. Make sure to stop at the historic Vista House for a photo op.

CONTEMPORARY

COMFORT FOOD

It starts with fry bread, Vi’s fry bread, the fry bread Jenny Slagle remembers from her childhood. Her mother, Violet, made fry bread for family gatherings, typically serving it as a side. “My mom makes the best fry bread,” Jenny says. “Growing up, her fry bread was a special treat.”

At Indigenous Eats, a fast-casual eatery specializing in contemporary Native American comfort food, Vi’s fry bread, with its crisp and golden brown exterior and light and fluffy interior, is front and center. Whether ordered on its own, with soup or as the base of an Indian taco, it’s filled with tradition and generations of family memories — as well as whatever topping or stuffing customers choose.

“They can customize their entrée however they want,” says Jenny, who, along with her husband, Andrew, scaled up her mother’s recipe for their eatery, which opened in August 2022 near the Gonzaga University campus.

A sign in the dining area declares: “No reservations needed.”

Each piece of fry bread is weighed and hand-pressed. Get one with a bowl of tomato-based Three Sisters Soup, a flavorful and belly-warming combination of squash, corn and beans. Try it with huckleberry sauce and powdered sugar or butter and honey for dessert.

Fry bread is also used in place of buns in the Powwow Burger, featuring huckleberry relish and an Angus beef patty weighing a third of a pound. And it’s traded for tortillas in Indian tacos. The Hunter is a top seller, topped with ground bison and seasoned with a sage-based blend. >>

>> The Rancher features seasoned ground beef. The Farmer, shredded chicken. And the vegetarian Gatherer, beans. Additional toppings are cheese, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, pickled jalapeños and sour cream, plus a choice of salsa and pinto, black or chili beans.

Of course, guests don’t have to have the fry bread. Other bases are wild rice, corn chips, tater tots and lettuce.

But fry bread — a combination of flour, baking powder, eggs and milk — is the star of this establishment.

Vi cooked by feel from experience, “so we had to work with her to measure out ingredients,” says Jenny, noting they scaled up her recipe to fit a 30-quart mixer. “We always want to honor our elders. I appreciate her having enough trust in us to take her recipe and use it in the space we are now.”

Jenny, an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation, has helped organize concessions at the Gathering at the Falls Pow Wow, recruiting her entire family to volunteer. Fry bread “was the main dish. My mom made all of it, and we would see thousands of people come through each year.”

A 2018 trip to Denver’s Tocabe, An American Indian Eatery, got her thinking: “Why isn’t it something we have in Spokane?”

When Andrew was laid off early in the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to school for an online business administration degree—one of his projects: crafting a business plan for a restaurant.

In 2021, the couple started looking for locations and funding, eventually renovating a former sandwich shop with seating for 60. Today, Jenny does the restaurant’s social media, marketing, bookkeeping and accounting part-time. Andrew works at Indigenous Eats full-time. Two of the couple’s four children work there, too.

“If you don’t know a lot about Native culture, coming in could be a learning experience,” Jenny says. Along with fry bread and belly-warming eats, “That’s also what we want to provide people.”

The Cork DisTriCT

The state of Washington has emerged as the second-largest producer of wine in the United States, so it’s unsurprising that Spokane has a rich wine scene. You could spend an entire weekend dedicating your efforts to tasting all the wines available. Twentyone wineries make up the city’s Cork District, while 17 have tasting rooms, all within walking distance in downtown Spokane. Not a terrible way to get your steps in, eh?

No matter what you’re looking for---reds with a pastoral view or chilled rosé in an urban setting--you’ll find it in Spokane. Pick your passion at some of these local faves. For a complete list of Spokane area wineries, scan the QR code.
