Beekeepers to swarm to annual Honey Bee Pick-Up Days in Fremont

FREMONT, Mich. -- The Great Lakes Bee Company's annual honey bee pick-up day is set for Saturday, May 13, at Kropscott Farm in Fremont.

The bees are returning home after pollinating almond crops in California and rebuilding hives in Georgia. The company says hundreds of backyard and professional beekeepers from the Great Lakes region will pick up the bees in five- and nine-frame nucleus colonies from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

More from a news release:

The annual bee pick-up event is a sign flowers and crops will soon be ready for pollination. Bees provide a natural way for pollination to occur during spring and summer months. During the event, there will be various displays and beekeeping products available from vendors throughout the Midwest region.

When the bees return to Fremont, Michigan, they forage on basswood, alfalfa, star thistle, and West Michigan flowers to create 150,000 pounds Michigan Honey. In addition to producing honey under the Hasselman brand, the bees are also hired to help pollinate various crops including: almonds (January); apricots, sweet cherries, peaches and plums (April); tart cherries, pears, blueberries and apples (May).

GLBC sells its honey wholesale to many retail outlets throughout Michigan including Meijer and Whole Foods, and at thegreatlakesbeecompany.com  . The company also offers other products made from their beeswax including: candles, lip balms, creams, soaps, and raw wax, among other items.
