The Trib HSSN Softball Team of the Week is Ambridge, a team that leapfrogged the two teams it beat last week in Section 3-4A.

The Bridgers won 11-2 Tuesday at New Castle, before cruising past Central Valley, 15-0, a day later.

“Our kids knew that we needed to have big games against these two opponents, and they came out hitting the ball very well,” Ambridge coach Jim Huwar said. “We had two good weeks of practice after losing to Knoch the second time. We needed to keep working on our offense and work harder on our pitching and defense.”

Those results improved Ambridge to 4-2 in the section, good for second place behind Knoch (6-0). The Bridgers are a game up in the loss column on New Castle (4-3) and two up on Central Valley (4-4) with one week left in section play.

Offense has been a big hit at Ambridge this season. The Bridgers have scored nine or more runs in six of their eight victories, including the two last week.

The Bridgers have six players hitting better than .400, but what stands out is the power. Ambridge has hit 20 home runs this spring, with senior Kimmy Kuzma and junior Haylee Holman leading the way with five each. Senior Alex Bupp has four, and junior Breanna Thomas has three.

“This team is one of the top five hitting teams that we ever had here at Ambridge,” Huwar said. “They may have more power hitters than we have on any one single team. Some of the other teams have had better batting averages and on- base percentages.”

The team has also smacked 17 doubles and four triples.

Ambridge closes out section play with four section games this week, including a battle for second place with New Castle on Tuesday.

Huwar said it’s important for his team to finish the regular season strong.

“We have discussed the next two weeks with this team and explained that we need to keep improving our hitting, fielding, base running, pitching and defense so that we can enter the playoffs on a high note.”
