Hiawatha Elementary
Week of May 10th
Hello Husky Families-
Happy Mother’s Day to all the Hiawatha mom’s. We hope you are relaxing and enjoying your special day! Thank you to everyone for all the donations for the OAV food drive. We appreciate all your support in this project!
Just a reminder, we have still had some dogs on school property. While we love everyone’s furry friends, dogs are not allowed on school property. Please leave your pets at home when dropping off or picking up your child from school. We appreciate your attention to this.
Please complete returning school registration so we can account for your student next year in our plans. The entire registration can be completed online. Check your email for the snap code you need to complete registration for your child. Everyone will receive a confirmation when the registration process is complete.
Just a reminder to please make sure you are checking your child’s temperature at home and filling out the self certification form before you leave home. This helps us to be able to let the students in quickly in the morning and ensures that everyone is symptom free. If your child is exhibiting any symptoms, we are asking families to keep all children at home until the symptoms subside and you speak with our school nurse.
Please continue to make sure your child is in attendance everyday. Student attendance is very important to your child’s success this school year and we need to work together on this. Please remember that if your child is going to be absent for any reason, you need to call the school office at 708-795-2327 to report the absence.
Please remember to continue to do your part to help stop the spread of this virus in our community. Please remember to always wear your mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and avoid large gatherings.
Stay safe and healthy Huskies!

COVID-19 Vaccinations
Are you and your family members over the age of 16 vaccinated? COVID-19 vaccinations are available in our community. Please see the information below and sign up today! Help stop the spread of COVID-19 in our community.
Hybrid Learning
Please remember that if your child is in hybrid we expect them to be in the building on their cohort days. Teachers have plans for them to be in school and unless there is a student illness please make sure they are in attendance on their scheduled days. Hybrid students should enter the building at the designated door between 8:30-8:45 a.m. This allows students to be ready for instruction to begin right at 9:00.
Remote Learning TIps
A few reminders to help remote learning be successful for your child…
Please make sure your child has their iPad and Logitech Crayon charged and is ready each day.
Keep your students schedule nearby to help them know what is coming next in their day.
Keep a small box of supplies near the child’s learning area so they can quickly have access to what they need throughout the day.
Headphones are also very helpful when you have more than one child on devices and will help everyone to focus.
A quiet area away from the tv is also very important.
Social Work Support
My name is Katelyn McCloskey. I am the School Social Worker at Hiawatha. My role at Hiawatha is to work with students to help them be successful in the classroom through teaching coping skills, problem solving skills and expression of feelings. There are a lot of extra stressors put on children and families in the time of Covid-19. If you are ever in need of support please feel free to contact me.

Spring is in the air! The sun is shining, the sky is blue, and flowers are blooming with the help of some rainy days! A few weekends this spring have even felt like summer! This time of year gives us the chance to get some fresh air, soak in the sunshine, and enjoy the outdoors with our families and friends. Along with the boost of Vitamin D, spending time outdoors can do wonders to lift our mood and spirits. From going on a bike ride, flying a kite, or playing at some of the local playgrounds in your neighborhood, parks offer many opportunities to safely enjoy the outdoors while social distancing.
Many park districts in the area, including Berwyn, North Berwyn, and North Riverside, and the Forest Preserves of Cook County are offering some family friendly events this summer including movie nights at the park, family camping events, and even an outdoor life-sized Candyland event!
Brookfield Zoo, the Morton Arboretum, Navy Pier, and the Chicago Botanic Gardens are also now open for visitors to enjoy. See the links below for information about outdoor events taking place this spring and summer in or near the Berwyn area, as well as for some additional ideas for having some outdoor fun in your own backyard!
