Warrior Winter Update
January 2022
Coleman Elementary, Your School of Choice
Differentiation: Teachers use guiding questions and prior assessment data to determine the current learning level of each student in class. This creates unique and different learning paths based on what each student needs.
1. What do students need to know and be able to do?
2. How will we know when they have learned it and can do it?
3. How will we respond when students don’t learn it?
4. How will we respond when they already know it?
Lesson Plans: Teachers write weekly lesson plans based on state approved standards, district approved curriculum pacing guides and assess progress using proficiency scales that detail what each student should know and be able to demonstrate in regard to state standards. Students should have homework every week night, Monday-Thursday that provides differentiated practice based on what your child needs. This homework may practice skills he/she had problems with in class or may move quickly to the next skill if he/she is ahead in learning. Ask us questions. Is your child behind, on track or ahead? If your child has an IEP, ask for regular updates on progress toward IEP goals.
Assessment: Per board policy, student grades, letter grades and/or standards based, should be accurate, consistent, meaningful and supportive of student learning. Grades in the gradebook should only reflect assessments that demonstrate a student's performance after instruction and intervention, if necessary. You can view your child's grades, attendance, lunch account, and general information provided at enrollment at any time via the Parent Portal.
Parent Teacher Conferences are the last week of January. Ask us about any or all of the following topics that relate to student learning and achievement:
~DRA2 is a formative reading assessment system that allows teachers to assess a student's reading level and observe, record and evaluate changes in performance over time. What does your child's DRA2 score mean? Is your child's current score below, on or above grade level?
~ Highly effective teaching and assessment practices
~ Student Data Binders
~ Academic, Behavioral or Social Emotional Interventions; is my child behind? What
interventions are in place to support progress?
~ Importance of Attendance
~ Class Dojo as a means of Home/School communication
*In person is our preferred method of conferencing during the week of parent/teacher conferences as long as you are feeling well. However, if this does not work for you we have several options to ensure our partnership stays strong including conferencing by phone, Zoom, email and Class Dojo. If your child is struggling in one or more areas, we will request that you meet in person to ensure we can create a plan to successfully address the concerns.
THANK YOU!
In addition, thank you for being honest and contacting school if/when your family has been a close contact or you experience Covid cases within the home. It seems like we are using a garden hose on a raging fire right now, but we will keep fighting the good fight because our kids, our staff and our families are worth it!
